to take air force one over to newtown, connecticut to take part in a vigil tonight. he'll be meeting with first responders, he'll also be meeting with family members of some of the survivors there. as you can see president obama making his way to air force one. kristen well welker who's standing by to travel with the president. what can we expect to hear from president obama tonight? >> reporter: as you mentioned, president obama is going to start off by meeting with the folks who were most affected by this tragedy as he arrives in newtown, connecticut. he'll be speaking with family members and first responders here at newtown high school. he said his comment also focus on the victims, on the lives lost. this is becoming an all too familiar path for this president. this will be the fourth time he will have spoken to a community that is reeling in the wake of a gun massacre. just this summer, he went to a aurora, colorado in the wake of the shooting there. last year, it was tucson, arizona, in 2009, it was ft. hood, texas. too many lives lost in all of these incidents, of course what

happened inside the school. we have some new developments to tell you about from here in newtown. the president, president barack obama will be here tomorrow. the white house says the president will meet with the family of the victims, the 20 children and the six adults killed in their elementary school yesterday. also, we have reaction this evening from peter lanza, the father of the 20-year-old police say killed those people and then killed himself. the father says, quote, our family is grooeing along with all those who have been affected by this enormous tragedy. no words can truly express how heart broken we are. now, let me show you this picture that was just obtained by cnn. it shows adam lanza, back in 2005. he would be about 13 years old in this picture. and we have word tonight from police who are trying to learn why this young man would commit such an horrific act. they say they have found very good evidence in adam lanza's home that is helping them put together the puzzle pieces in that investigation. that home is also a crime scene now. investigators say lanza's mothe

and a nation in disbelief. i'm candy crowley in newtown, connecticut. >>> today, the unthinkable at sandy hook elementary school. >> you can never be prepared for this kind of incident. >> the latest on the investigation with connecticut governor dan malloy, and then grief and guns. a conversation with the colorado govern governor. plus, experts on keeping school safe coping with trauma and profiling a mass murderer, all on this special edition of "state of the union." first, the latest on the newtown murders. this morning connecticut's chief medical examiner will perform autopsies on the gunman and his mother, who was killed at her home. the results will be released during a news conference later today. the names of the victims were made public last night. 12 girls and 8 boys killed, all either 6 or 7 years old. the six adults killed at the school were women. the medical examiner says every victim he saw was hit more than once, and all the wounds he saw were inflicted by the semi-automatic rifle found at the scene. president obama will be here in newtown late this afternoon to meet with the v

to read and consider carefully before investing. >>> we've been talking about the tragedy in newtown, connecticut. and that was not the only news story this week. one important story that was uncovered before the friday shooting. the future of women's under the violence act. it provided billions of dollars to investigate violent crimes against women but it expired. they offered to expand the bill with a new protection for same-sex couples, american indians and undocumented immigrants. so the house balked so in tuesday at a rare show of defiance in their own party leadership ten house rips signed on to a letter written by democration asking house supremer john boehner and majority leader kantor to on the reauthorization of the violence against women act bringing a bill inclusive of all those protected by violence and similar to those that loor passed to the house floor for a vote. there must be a partizan bill to protect all those vulnerable. senate republicans that vote the against it say they are willing to support it but conservatives in the house remain opposed. the bill failed to
